Vasanta Vihar exists for the sole purpose of enabling people to explore Krishnamurti’s teachings. This is always its sole and primary objective — to encourage and facilitate the study of what Krishnamurti called “the transformation of man.”
It is the headquarters of the Krishnamurti Foundation India. Krishnamurti himself visited and gave talks here many times over the decades. The campus on Greenways Road carries something of that presence — a quality of attention that those who stay here often find difficult to name.
The campus is open throughout the year — for retreat participants, for independent study visits, and for the KFI’s own ongoing work of archiving, publishing, and education.
“It must last a thousand years, unpolluted, like a river that has the capacity to cleanse itself… And the teachings in themselves have the authority of truth.
It is a place for the flowering of goodness, communication and cooperation not based on work, ideal, or personal authority… It is essentially a religious centre according to what K has said about religion.
It is a place where one is not only physically active, but there is also a movement of learning. So each one becomes the teacher and the disciple. It is not a place for one’s own illumination or one’s own goal of fulfilment — but rather for sustaining each other and nourishing each other in flowering in goodness.”
— J. Krishnamurti · On Vasanta Vihar

— At the heart of the campus
The Study
At the centre of Vasanta Vihar is The Study — a library and reading room holding Krishnamurti’s books, recorded talks, and study materials. It is the place where guests and visitors spend most of their time on campus.
The Study is device-free. No mobile phones, laptops, or tablets are brought inside. The quality of attention it asks for — and offers — depends on that simplicity.
Video screenings of Krishnamurti’s talks are held regularly. There is space for individual reading, for quiet reflection, and for the kind of informal conversation that arises naturally when people are gathered around the same questions.
“As I see it, a Study Centre has become a necessity because that is the place where the treasure is. From that treasure you can draw your strength, your energy, your sustenance, nourishment… Here is something that is sacred; and from that everything flows.”
— J. Krishnamurti

— Preserving the teachings
The central archives
The central archives of the Krishnamurti Foundation India is a repository of material pertaining to the teachings of J. Krishnamurti. Its mission is to preserve the teachings as they were written and spoken, without distortion or interpretation, and to give research scholars access to documents.
The vast body of Krishnamurti’s teachings must be seen as a landmark in the history of human thought and wisdom. We can be deeply grateful that Krishnamurti lived in a time when the means were at hand to record extensively the words and presence of this unique teacher.
There is an urgent necessity to protect and preserve the highly perishable source records of Krishnamurti’s works for posterity — for they constitute, in content and volume, the richest contribution of the present century to the cultural and religious heritage of humanity.
